"stone-wash" effects as required by the fashion world.
Their success is attributed to the significant cost savings
when compared to conventional stone washing, mainly with
pumice stones. This cost saving is achieved by :
» The reduction or elimination of pumice stones, thereby saving in handling and storage
» Reduced wear and tear on the machinery.
» Reduced problems in effluent handling
» Effectively increasing the capacity of the washing machines, since additional denims or any cotton fabric can be added when stones are replaced.
The properties of enzymes that make them so important is the specificity they exhibit relative to the reactions they catalyze. Few enzymes are specific for a particular type of chemical bond or functional group. In general, there are four distinct types of specificity :
» Absolute Specificity - the enzyme will catalyze only one reaction.
» Group Specificity-the enzyme will act only on molecules that have specific function groups, such as amino, phosphate and methyl groups.
» Linkage Specificity - the enzyme will act on a particular type of chemical bond regardless of the rest of the molecular structure.
» Stereo Chemical Specificity - the enzyme will act on a particular steric or optical isomer
